Rudy Mancuso joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Música, the mostly true film based on his own life. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Musica tells a coming-of-age love story about an aspiring creator with synesthesia who must come to terms with an uncertain future. All the while, he’s navigating the pressures of love, family, and his Brazilian culture in Newark, New Jersey.

Mancuso discusses writing, directing, and acting in the project, as well as how his lack of formal filmmaking education led to one of the most creatively shot movies of the year. “I never approached filmmaking from an academic perspective, [and that] gave me more freedom,” says Mancuso. “It was liberating in a way, because there were very little perimeters. I didn’t know too much about structuring a page or a scene or, eventually, the three acts.”

The filmmaker goes on to chat about what it was like working with J.B. Smoove, his love of film scores, and his upcoming plans for his future career.
